DOTA's Great Divide in Singapore.

Thursday, September 29, 2005

Today, let's talk about the current great DOTA divide in Singapore.

Generally, there are two camps, no, techincally it should be three camps of DOTA players right now. What??? Yes, correct, three camps. One camp is the DOTA 5.84C camp, the second camp is the 6.XX camp and the final camp is the DOTA whatever version camp.

Characteristics of the three camp are very very different and each camp is clearly seperated, hence today's title with the mention of "Great Divide".

Camp 5.84C - Gamers belonging to this camp are generally long time DOTA gamers and the special thing about them is that they have fiery passion about competitive gaming. Most probably, they started playing competitively from 2004 where all the major DOTA tournaments started by more prominent organisation like Rapture Gaming and Lanlab Online. Due to the fact that the version used commonly is 5.XX version, these player are already very much accustom to the many aspects of the game like heroes, items, maps layout, stats, strategy and also general opponent's strategy. Yes, and many of these gamers have clocked in tonn of hours with version 5.XX and adding that to 2005's WCG Singapore's 5.84C competition you can say that they know 5.84c inside out. It's understandable that they hug so dearly to their beloved 5.84C version.

However, due to their fiery passion for 5.84c and they are longer open to the fact that any newer versions of DOTA are also as good, as fun as 5.84C, and most importantly it can also be used as competitive map version. They strongly believed that 5.84C is the one and only for competitive DOTA game play and if improvement or update is to be made it should be done on 5.84C instead. Reason for such behavior could be many, some could have genuinely tested the new versions intensively and could not get the hang of it, then there are also some who have not tested the new version enough or never approach the new version without any wish to change to new version at all. So what happens is that there is a group currently campaigning 5.84c very strongly and is even trying to get some gosu coder/maper to fix 5.84c map and with very strong hope and confident that it can be pushed out locally first then internationally and be accepted worldwide as the competitive version for DOTA.

Camp 6.XX - Majority of the gamers in this camp are also long time DOTA gamers. They have played so much of 5.84c and have enough of that version, some even are sick of it, most probably because of the many problems that exist in that map. Then there are a minority portion who are new gamers that have started on this version and find it extremely fun and have stuck to it from day one These gamers also are have fiery passion about the new version. Those long time players most have stuck to this version because of their dislike of earlier version which are filled with bugs and exploitation loopholes. They felt that 5.84c is not suitable since the newer 6.XX version are out. With new heroes, fixed, nerfing, balancing, items, map layout and with the ongoing support of the new development team lead by Icefrog, 6.XX or newer maps could never be wrong. The newer version maps are more suitable for both casual and competitive play.

Well, the similar can be said for this group. They could not longer breath the same air in 5.84c because of their resentment of it is still polluted with bugs, unbalance heroes, game loopholes exploitation. The new may version have give new game dimension and new hope. Their burning passion for 6.XX and any later versions are so strong that they have cast out 5.84c from their life, and hope to erase that memory. They support the new versions by playing only the new version and never to touch the old version again. A minority of them in this camp went as far to disrespect anyone who is still playing the old version and calling them names. These minority in the 6.XX camp do not even bother to find out or understand why are those

Camp Whatever Version - In this camp, the gamers here are a mix and match in their support for DOTA, regardless it's the new version or old version. These gamer will play competitively where the money is, trains to be good in both the version. They will play in whatever version that organiser is using as the competition map. When playing for fun they will also be joining either the 5.84c or 6.XX version that they are call to play with by their friend anytime any place. Their passion is not in 5.84c, not in 6.xx and of cause not in any later version. Their passion is dedicated to DOTA, yes, just DOTA. They will support any version be it old or new, as long the map is fun to play, as long there are competition. They will play. The key point is, enjoyment in playing in DOTA anytime, anywhere and anyplace.

Well, these group sometime tends to lend some of their support to the "Camp 6.XX" but end of the day they still will support both old and new DOTA versions. Generally more peaceful and less vocal. Almost no compaigning for any particular version as they are considered the sitting on the fence kind of gamers. Willing to accept any type of game map version, game mode and game play. Almost heavenly.

These are my conclusion of the three current groups in Singapore. Which group you still wants to be in? You decide.

Words of advice from DOTASG PAPA here, it will be the best if all local players can unite together and support DOTA as purely itself and not by different version. Competitive player should move on and lend more support to the new version, of cause not forgetting the old, simply to put it is to go where the pot of gold is. It is always healthy to help to promote the newer map version because there is a dedicated development working to improve DOTA gaming as a whole. They are trying their best with sacrificial of their precious time to fix the wrongs in the older version like balancing out things that are grossly unbalance, bugs that totally kills the fun of the game, coding/map error that throw everyone out when things get exciting. We as DOTA lover should all support. Also not to forget learn to respect all fellow DOTA gamers, love them no matter what DOTA version they are supporting. Give them respect for their decision to support the particular version. Talk to them and make them understand and not forcing it down their throat if you want to make them support a particular version. Always starts with what good will a particular maps brings over the old one, try you best not to approach by saying "oh this map sucks because....., so you should try ....". And meanwhile you are always free to play the older version casually or competitively as and when it needed. Don't have to totally cast the other unpopular version, game mode or game format out of your life completely.

Well these are all I can say for now. And hope that this article can shed more lights to the current situation and what DOTA players should do to unite not for the good of themselves only but to the good of DOTA gaming in Singapore. Although, Singapore is small but I can bet my last dollar that the world are looking at us with respect to DOTA. So if we make a fools of ourselves, the world will know too.

Signing off, DOTASG PAPA

And here comes 6.18

Monday, September 26, 2005
Shortly, 6.18 is out.

Mostly cosmetic enhancements and some bug fixes. The only thing of note is perhaps the Lich's str increase per level is down to 1.55 from 1.75. IMO that means Lich will be even more jelly in early game, but with the Scepter or a Skadi it won't really make THAT much of a difference.

Download from here.

Upon receiving the score and replays of both home and away games by the winner of both round to DOTASG's email, the score will be locked in and recorded by DOTASG’s game admin if there are not further dispute.

Replays are to named as PlayerA_vs_PlayerB_RoundNumber.
Example, PPG vs CHOLE matchup, then two games are to be save as PPG_vs_CHOLE_R1 and CHOLE_vs_PPG_R2

Scores are to be reported in email's title as PlayerA vs PlayerB (score:score).
Example , PPG vs CHOLE matchup, PPG won 2 game and the score would be reported as PPG vs CHOLE (2:0)

For games that are draw with each player winning one round, then it's the left hand side player's duty to send in replay. Replays not sent will result in 0 score for that player. Intentional non submission of draw result will cause that player to be put into hall of shame and be punished with game loss for next game or even disqualification.

Any results reporting email that is sent without both the replays and the socre will be void (no score for both players) for that matchup.

Please feel free to bring it up in our comment section or email to dotasg@yahoo.com.sg if you have any questions.

Moving On. Bye Bye Today, Hello Tomorrow.

Tuesday, September 20, 2005
After some discussions my DOTASG guys, it is unanimous that we will put that bad patch (if you have been a following DOTASG's posts you will know what I am referring to.) behind. I had and will end it on my side with my last comment on it. No more further comment will be entertained.

All of us will be moving on and not let it drag us down. Okay, we had confirmed that we will have another round DOTASG online FRIENDLY 5.84C 1vs1. It will be held on next week's weekend night similar to our previous 1vs1 event. Maybe there might be some minor changes to the rules and regulations to ensure smoother running of the event. So please lookout for our posting on the details of the next DOTA 5.84C 1vs1 event.

Meanwhile we need some help from you guys to feedback to us of any of your experience in playing 1vs1 for DOTA 6.XX version. Suggestion on how to make it gamer friendly will also be welcomed. We will be gathering more information to see if 6.XX map is suitable to be use for 1vs1 game format.

Also a DOTA 6.16 tournament league is in currently in planning so do look out for these exciting events.

Cheers.

Sad sad sad......real sad and disappointed.

Quoted from previous post's comment.
"RetardPatrol said...

i haf absolutely no idea y 5.84c is still being used. Try loggin on to lancraft/zion, u will see almost 70% of the games in lancraft/zion are v6.xx(most of the 5.84c games r Msian games anyway) and i believe the % is higher on bnet. Most of the clans r also switching over to v6 after the WCG finals.

ppl all over r trying so hard to convince the remaining 5.84c players/clans to switch over to v6.xx and im really puzzled bout y u guys still stubbornly wanting to use tis imba/old/unofficial/rotten/buggy map.

i used to think tis site was pro-v6 and reading the articles/news was pretty enjoyable too. But the recent 1v1 5.84c really disappoints me and watsup wit tat 'Malaysia's Infernal | M1 DOTA teams'? the title of tis webby is DOTA SG... hello?"

I am not sure about other guys in DOTSG but, I personally am very sadden by such comment. On one hand we are trying our best to bring something to SG's DOTA community, but on the other hand we are receiving such discouraging comment(s).

But I am sure that there are more who are supporting us than those who are putting us down. So please do not worry, DOTASG will continue to bring in more interesting and fun event to you guys out there who support us.

Anyway if you guys are intersted to know what's my reply to retardpatrol, please click here to read my reply.

CPL Singapore!!!

Tuesday, September 13, 2005
It's not DOTA related but I thought it might be interesting to share that the CPL is coming to Singapore! Finally after such a long time. To be fair, it's because they cancelled CPL China due to the Chinese government having some restriction on voilent games or something like that. What an arse. But that means you Singaporeans get all the fun now. Damn, I'm envious!

Well, not really something to celebrate about because I doubt the CPL would host a DOTA competition unless a certain 'some people' decide to do some talking with Angel Munoz and Co. Hmmmmm maybe I should pick up Painkiller and kick Fatal1ty's or Voo's ass.

DOTA 6.15 Release.

Well, Kudos to the DOTA 6.XX developement team from www.dota-allstars.com. They have been very efficient and hardworking in making DOTA right with release after release of the 6.xx version. This really makes version 6.XX promising to be used for future DOTA tournament event worldwide.

Well, let's just hope that all, if not 99% of the major bugs and problems be fixed such that DOTA can be put onto the worldwide competitive tournament stage. How nice it would be if DOTA can be in WCG, CPL, ESWC or any other major international gaming events.

My crystal ball tells me that this will happens one day. Let's all pray hard for that day to come soon.

Field Report from Lanlab Online's DOTA 5.84C Tourny.

Wednesday, September 07, 2005
Well, as expected DOTA SG PAPA's team crashed and burned very fast. We met team LT aka Elites during the first round and got served left, right, center and then KO by them.

Elites (Scourge)

Medusa
Omni Knight
Slardar
Necrolyte
Bone Click

DOTA SG PAPA's team (Sentinels)

Faceless Void
Morph
Centaur
Sven
Lich

Battle Report: During the early game we were playing very cautiously and everything went pretty well. However, once mid game we started to become very disorganised and that become our killing blow. One by one our wandering heroes were being picked off by enemy's ganging. Due to that, the enemy heroes becomes stronger and thus when coming to 5 vs 5 faceoff in mid we still couldn't withstand their onslaught.

Well, just hope that we have better luck next time. Don't worry, this is not the end of the day for DOTA SG PAPA and his gang of misfits. You will see us in action soon.

By the way, my writer, Watch the World had already posted the results in one of the post below.

Congratulation to team AZ on their win. Team AZ is really a close knit team with great players. If you happens to get to know them, you will simply love them. Really friendly and great guys (and gals).

Well, you can catch more of team AZ (seeded) in action during the WCG 2005 Singapore Championship National Final at Suntec city Hall 401. Opening ceremony starts this Thursday at 5pm. DOTA 5.84C's actions will start on Friday at 10am, then all the way to the night. Miss it and you will sure regret it. More details can be found at sg.worldcybergames.com. For our brothers across the boarder, those who can come down to SG conveniently also come and enjoy a piece of an action at WCG Singapore.

WCG 2005 Singapore Championship's Schedule is Up.

Sunday, September 04, 2005
WCG Singapore National finals schedules are all put up at last. Do visit WCG Singapore's website for more information and details of the competition structures. Other official and local games information can also be found there.

Let's take a peek at the match-up tables.

DOTA 5.84C Mini League Table.
Click on the table to zoom in.

seems like there are going to be some exciting battle between some of the more prominent teams in the DOTA community. We will very soon know who will cross all barriers and emerge as the Champion.

DOTA 6.12B KO Table.

Although, DOTA 6.12B is a side event this year in WCG Singapore 2005 Championship with only 8 team in a KO format, but it is a good chance for us to observe how 6.12B can be as fun and as competitive as DOTA 5.84C. Hope after that maybe some of the 5.84C participants will be convinced to cross over to the DARK SIDE. Haahaa.

DOTASG PAPA and His Gang of DOTA Misfits.

If anyone don't know yet, DOTASG PAPA has a team of great DOTA kakis(Singapore slang for friends). All of us has been doing our best to find time from our busy schedules to play together and train for competitive DOTA. This team is formed recently so hope all other DOTA pro teams out there please give this team some chance, maybe a free win or two would be appreciated...as if that will happens, haha.

Anyway, the main point of this post is about an upcoming DOTA compy @ LanLab Online Cyber Cafe(Bukit Timah). I will try to bring some game coverage and pictures from that event.

Those who are free on coming Sunday, do proceed down to Lanlab to witness the actions.
