Leaguemode (-lm) in DotA 6.20 revealed.

Tuesday, November 01, 2005
Many of you would probably be asking what in the hell is "leaguemode" aka "-lm" in DotA 6.20 and how the hell it works?

Well, fret not. The Papa is here to explain.

When you enter the 6.20 game, once you type "-lm", it will enter you into the league mode state. What happens next is that the first player(blue) on sentinels will have 20 sec to pick his hero. After he pick his hero then it will be the other scourge side's first player to pick within the 20 sec given also. This will goes back and forth until everyone picked their hero. I guess you all are clever enough to guess that this is the drafting system for DotA tournaments in Singapore.

However, after some testing there seems to be a little bug. I am not sure if it's suppose to be that way but whenever any player miss his selection after 20 secs the hero selection will not be available for that player and the selection will be pass over to the other side. However, after everyone else picked the game does not start. And any player who never get to select the hero will not get any hero even after the drafting process is over. No random hero is assigned to any player that missed the hero selection and the game just stuck there.

This is what I have concluded after a quick test. If anyone else have different experience with this mode, do share with us in our forums or in the comments section.

Offtopic: My 2 cents -
This drafting system of gameplay is actually pioneered by Rapture Gaming Pte. Ltd. Credits are also given to some avid DotA gamers too as they had also given some creative suggestions on how are the different ways to do drafting fairly.

Now, it is getting prominent that this drafting system is gradually creeping into mainstream DotA tournament events overseas. And right now it's even adopted by DotA development team. Many thanks to Icefrog's team for making it happens in the latest DotA version to include the league mode such that drafting process can be made easier with less manual work needed.

This game mode evidently promote fun, healthy and fairer tournament game play. What I concluded is, this game mode will be here to stay until another genius idea comes along to replace this mode.

Although I cannot say for sure that we directly have affect the way competitive DotA are, but I am pretty sure that all Singaporean's DotA gamers can be proud that a home grown company and our DotA community had done and made a little achievement in doing small part in influencing the DotA competitive gaming worldwide in some way.

Three cheers to all Singapore's DotA gamers, organisers and community for being the forerunner in accepting this game mode and showing the world that drafting system works wonders for a better tournament game play experience.
